Dark Season Episode Four

Pre-title sequence:

'The Behemoth awakes!'

Miss Pendragon tells her group of fair-haired followers that their waiting is finally over.  She takes a spade and raises it in a ceremonial manner, then drives it into the ground.  In response, there is a deep rumble.  ‘The Behemoth awakes!’ she declares, exalted.

Thomas spies the digArriving at school, Marcie, Reet and Thomas discover an area of the grounds has been cordoned off for some sort of work.  They speculate about what is going on.

Look after yourself, LukeMiss Pendragon and her second-in-command, Inga, observe the children watching the site.  Pendragon and Inga go to their headquarters, a cabin on site, where Pendragon presses a set of headphones to her ear: she can hear that the feed to the Behemoth is still active.  Luke, another of Pendragon’s blond followers, enters and Pendragon asks him to guide a party from the school round the site, lying as necessary.  He must take care though, in such a dangerous environment, not to get damaged…

The trio joins up with a party of Miss Maitland’s pupils who are being guided around the site by Luke.  He claims it is an archaeological dig, though Marcie is able to identify a number of flaws in his story.  Pendragon joins the party, and says they are searching for the Behemoth, whom she describes as mighty creature from Celtic legend, bound in the ground by the Gods of war.

Miss Maitland and the 'damaged goods'Marcie sneaks off and discovers the cabin.  Listening to the headphones she hears a sound like a heartbeat.  Meanwhile, a probe Pendragon orders lowered into the ground provokes dramatic results: the earth shakes, and there is an explosion.  Luke falls into part of the dig, and hurts his arm. Pendragon is furious – Luke was ‘perfect stock’ and now is useless.  She has the site cleared of outsiders, but Marcie and Thomas remain behind, hidden.

Miss Maitland drives Luke to hospital, accompanied by Reet.  They discover that he knows nothing about archaeology.  At his interview they wanted to know if his blond hair was natural, and if he had any birth marks…

Confronted by Pendragon’s followers, Marcie and Thomas run into the opening of the dig.  Inga wants to send the men after them, believing the children to be a rogue element.  Pendragon however realises that Thomas has blond hair and insists that these events were meant to be.
