Inga and her guards leave the control room and head up to the surface. Thomas meanwhile spots a ladder running up the shaft the Behemoth ascended, and climbs up after it.
In the assembly hall, the Behemoth demands instructions. Miss Maitland attempts to free Pendragon from it, but receives an electric shock. Marcie, noticing Thomas, comments on the Behemoth’s dependence on its lifeline. He climbs back down the shaft to the control room. Inga and her Nazi followers plan to use the Behemoth to install a new world order, but Eldritch has other plans: nuclear Armageddon, and chaos.
Back
in the control room, Thomas encounters Reet and together they attack the lifeline,
which explodes. In the assembly hall, sparks fly from the Behemoth, and it
releases its hold on its human occupant. Miss Maitland and Inga help the distraught
Pendragon free from the machine, and together with the troops, run from the
hall. Eldritch however activates the Behemoth’s defences. Light beams emerge
from the machine and it interfaces with the school’s power supply. The doors
to the assembly hall close by themselves. Beneath the ground, doors are also
closing. Thomas and Reet attempt to escape but Reet becomes trapped.
Outside the hall, Miss Maitland is concerned for Marcie, and Miss Pendragon for the Behemoth. One of the troops attempts to open the door to the hall, but receives an electric shock. Maitland confronts Pendragon, then exits into the school grounds where she runs into Thomas. They set off to attempt to release Reet.
Marcie
and Eldritch are alone with the Behemoth. It speaks with its own voice and
asks who commands, the man or the girl. Eldritch orders it to fulfil its function
and destroy the world. Marcie however has no commands – she tells it that because
it is alive, and asking questions, it doesn’t have to do what it was built for.
Behemoth decides it has risen above its foolish makers, and will not destroy.
Eldritch announces that Behemoth has made the wrong decision and steps into
the control seat. Whilst Pendragon’s mind was absorbed, his is stronger…
Below
ground, Reet is running out of air. Miss Maitland and Thomas are unable to
open the door she is trapped behind. Miss Maitland runs off, determined to
do something.
In the hall, Marcie begs Behemoth to lower its defences and destroy itself – below ground the doors open and Reet is freed. Eldritch and Behemoth engage in a battle of identity. Finally, the Behemoth and Eldritch speak together and declare, ‘I am Eldritch.’
Reet
and Thomas run from the installation, to discover Miss Maitland has taken control
of a bulldozer. She uses it to strike a water pipe, and water floods down into
the control chamber.
In
the hall, sparks fly from the Behemoth. It opens the exit doors and tells Marcie
to save herself. There is a brilliant explosion and Eldritch disappears from
Behemoth’s chair. Pendragon runs into the hall and throws herself into the
vacated chair. The Behemoth closes around her and descends into the flooded
darkness of the installation.
Outside
at the dig site, Marcie is sceptical that Miss Maitland’s intervention could
have destroyed a war machine. She maintains that it chose to destroy itself.
Thomas asks what has happened to Eldritch:
Marcie: Moved on.
Thomas: But who was he?
Marcie: I don’t know. The worst of all bad men. As for us – we’re marvellous!
She
rights a fallen spade, and the three walk off.
